GTA 6 details reveal massive Leonida map, hurricanes, fast travel, and over 170 animal species

Game Informer's preview of Grand Theft Auto 6 outlines new features including hurricanes, a map twice the size of GTA 5, six unique regions, animal tracking, and a shared-ride fast travel system.

Rockstar Games has shared extensive new details regarding Grand Theft Auto 6 through a recent Game Informer preview. The upcoming open-world title features a redesigned weather system, confirmed extreme weather phenomena, and an expansive map set in the fictional state of Leonida.

Weather systems and map scale

Extreme weather is officially confirmed for the game, with Rockstar verifying the inclusion of hurricanes following years of fan speculation about technical feasibility. While the studio has not yet specified how frequently hurricanes will occur or whether they impact the narrative, the environmental effects include heavy clouds, strong winds, threatening atmospheres, and torrential rain that wets surfaces, causes water to run off structures, and triggers thunder and lightning.

Owen Shepherd, who handles lighting and rendering at Rockstar, explained that the studio rebuilt the weather system to support localized, continuous, and dynamic weather conditions. Players can experience sunshine in one area while observing rain in the distance, alongside realistic rainbows and lingering puddles.

According to Aaron Garbut, co-studio head of Rockstar North, the game map is twice the size of Grand Theft Auto 5. Set in Leonida, the world contains six unique regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Ambrosia, a rural area featuring factories and refineries, is controlled by a motorbende described as distinct from the Lost MC. The narrative is structured to guide players through these regions to highlight contrasts between wealthier and poorer areas.

Fast travel and transportation

Grand Theft Auto 6 introduces a fast-travel system allowing players to book a ride and be driven through the city. These can be shared rides with other passengers, featuring conversational interactions. Alternatively, players can browse Snapmatic, an in-game social media parody, though protagonists Jason and Lucia cannot post content themselves to avoid endangering their status as fugitives.

Vehicle theft involves increased variety and security measures. Expensive vehicles require specialized tools, and security systems or trackers can interfere with the theft. A mobile application named WAiNK displays resale values, security types, and conversion costs, with sales handled through a fence.

Activities, wildlife, and mechanics

The title includes numerous activities such as basejumping, billiards, gym workouts, kayaking, minigolf, diving, street and offroad races, zoo visits, swamp boat tours, and jetskiing. Hunting also returns, allowing players to track animals by following footprints, alongside rare animal species.

Michael Kane, vice president of dynamic art at Rockstar, noted that the game features over 170 animal species, comprising more than 60 bird species, over 30 land mammal species, and various fish and reptiles. Aquatic wildlife such as sharks, jellyfish, whales, turtles, and rays possess unique movement behaviors and appear during diving.

Heists play a central role with multiple approaches available, though player choices directly influence police response severity. Jason and Lucia can attempt to evade law enforcement together or split up, but if either character is subdued by police, it results in a game over.

Player choices also impact the relationship between Jason and Lucia, opening up romantic options through dates, messages, and gestures, as well as influencing the overarching narrative and encouraging multiple playthroughs.
