Activision has detailed five core features coming to the upcoming DMZ mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Set on the new Hajin map and inspired by the events and locations of the main campaign, the open-world combat environment requires players to loot, complete objectives, fight enemies and rival operators, and extract before losing their progress.
Forward Operating Base and 3D Printing
Between deployments, players return to the Forward Operating Base where the 3D Printer serves as the primary crafting station for equipment and loadout upgrades. Progressing through DMZ unlocks new crafting recipes, which can also be discovered during deployments provided the player successfully extracts. Crafting relies on two main types of materials: four basic resources found during deployments—synthetics, electronics, chemicals, and metals—and rarer 3D printer ingredients located in specific areas of Hajin, such as binding catalysts, biomaterials, detonators, and control units.

Missions and Dynamic Operations
DMZ offers three deployment paths: Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Free Roam. Story Missions provide narrative-led, replayable deployments with briefing intel, required objectives, and high-value rewards or DMZ cash, though some require prerequisites. Dynamic Operations present squads with multiple goals to complete after deploying, rewarding them with DMZ XP, cash, and the option to call in a supply drop filled with unpredictable loot.
Operator Customization and Progression
Players begin with two operator slots and can unlock a third by increasing their DMZ level. Surviving deployments and earning DMZ XP levels up an operator’s dog tags, which grants trait points. These points can be invested across the Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist trait trees up to a maximum of 18 earnable points from a selection of over 60 traits. However, operators who fail to extract become MIA and must be recovered using DMZ cash—with costs increasing alongside trait investment—or dismissed.
Looting and Extraction Mechanics
Looting containers during deployments supplies resources for combat, supports marked operations, and helps advance the Forward Operating Base. All acquired items, including contents in the bank and stash, are shared across all active duty operators. The mode culminates in extraction runs where players call in transport and attempt to escape Hajin with their acquired goods and surviving operators.
Digital pre-orders for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 grant early access to the campaign starting Friday, October 16, and access to DMZ starting Tuesday, October 20.
