Ubisoft Milan reportedly pitched unreleased Zelda spin-off starring Ganondorf

According to reports, Ubisoft Milan developed a prototype for an unreleased Legend of Zelda spin-off featuring Ganondorf as the playable protagonist before Nintendo ultimately rejected the project in late 2023.

Ubisoft Milan previously pitched a distinct The Legend of Zelda project to Nintendo set within a new universe, according to reports. Internal development carried the codename Goliath, reflecting the scale that the studio intended to achieve. Former Ubisoft developer Gian Marco Zanna reportedly characterized the ambitious concept as a major new beginning for the gaming universe.

Rather than following Link through Hyrule, the proposed spin-off would have centered on an entirely new character. During early conceptualization, Nintendo reportedly requested that this original protagonist be replaced with the franchise antagonist, Ganondorf, which would have marked the first time the character served as the central playable role in a Zelda game.

Sources indicated that Ubisoft Milan was given until late 2023 to develop a prototype for the Ganondorf-focused game. Nintendo ultimately rejected the proposal upon completion, though the exact reasons for the cancellation remain unclear. Because the title was planned as a spin-off rather than a direct prequel or sequel, specifics regarding Ganon’s role or the original concept plans were not detailed.

Ubisoft did not respond to requests for comment regarding the project, though the company had internally acknowledged that a journalist inquired about the Goliath codename. The cancelled initiative shares a historical parallel with other unreleased projects, such as a previously disclosed Disney fighting game concept revealed through artist portfolio artwork.
