Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new performance tier of AI upscaling designed to bring AI-guided image improvements to the base PS5 console. Previously, the computational demands of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which launched on the PS5 Pro, prevented a similar experience from being brought to the standard PS5 hardware.
The new QSSR library stems from Project Amethyst, an AI graphics collaboration between Sony and AMD. The development relies on a streamlined neural network architecture combined with a hand-tuned implementation built to maximize performance specifically on the PS5. While PSSR remains the gold standard on the PS5 Pro, Sony states that QSSR delivers notable enhancements to both image detail and image stability on the base console.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first titles scheduled to utilize the new library. Both games are receiving patches to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on the platform.
Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions have detailed how the technology affects their respective projects. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, noted that QSSR provides pixel-level clarity and stability to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine, highlighting areas such as the streets of Madripoor and the alleyways of Shinjuku. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, stated that QSSR resolves fine details in characters and environments for Ghost of Yōtei with a level of temporal stability previously unavailable on the console.
Sony intends to offer the QSSR library broadly to all PlayStation developers for integration into future titles.
