Roblox Makes Age Checks a Requirement for Chat Worldwide

Roblox is rolling out age checks for chat, aiming to keep communication within more appropriate age groups.

Roblox is making age checks a requirement for access to chat wherever the feature is available. The platform says the system is designed to place communication inside age-based groups and reduce contact between adults and users under 16.

What changes for players

Users are prompted to complete an age-estimation process before using chat. Roblox says parental consent remains required for children under nine to access communication features, while verified users aged 13 and over can use Trusted Connections for broader conversations with people they know.

Privacy and appeals matter

According to Roblox, images and video used for facial age estimation are deleted after processing. The company also describes alternative verification and appeal routes for incorrect estimates. Those safeguards are important: a safety system only earns trust when players can understand it and correct genuine mistakes.

The Guild verdict

Roblox serves an unusually broad audience, so communication cannot sensibly work as a single unrestricted space. Age-aware chat is a meaningful structural change, but its success should be judged by accuracy, transparency and whether parents and players can navigate the controls without confusion.
